Maraudeur

The construction of a Marauder in epoxy and wood

It is a cabin dinghy of about 5m designed by Jean-Jacques Herbulot, more than 60 years ago. A first copy of Maraudeur CI (Individual Construction) was launched by Etienne Lhermite. The boat is built and turned on a mold made of wooden couples: the bulkheads, the daggerboard and the planking are made of Niangon and Okoumé, an extremely light red exotic wood.

Once turned over, the edges are then glued with epoxy lengthwise. A second ply of plywood for the chines covers the whole vertically. The keel planking is "stitched and glued" and then firmly joined to the bottom planking by a fillet joint. They are laminated with 300 g/m² glass cloth. Once again turned over, and the support of the bulkheads removed, the whole structure is then consolidated on the inside by filleted joints  (SR 5550 and SD 5503 + WOODFILL charges) entre les différentes parties assemblées.

With the keel ready, the yard took a new turn to accommodate the deck, cockpit and cabin parts. All glued again and again with epoxy. Once finished, the painting and finishing work can then start.

Once armed, and the stability and righting tests carried out, "Désiré" can now sail on calm waters...
