Epoxy resin can be used in many different fields. While its properties make it a highly valued material in marine and transport applications, as well as in electrical engineering, electronics, sports, and leisure, epoxy resin is also widely used to create decorative objects. In this context, many people wonder whether it is possible to paint it or not. What should you think about it? Which products are suitable? What alternatives are available? Let’s take a closer look in this article.
Painting epoxy resin: a good or bad idea?
Epoxy resin has the major advantage of offering excellent adhesion to most substrates. Whether it is wood, metal, plastic, or even concrete, it adapts easily. Transparent and glossy, it delivers very attractive results in decoration and furniture making. However, it is naturally colorless and also sensitive to UV exposure. Sunlight can indeed cause it to develop a rather unpleasant yellow tint.
It is important to know that specific products are available on the market, including certain paints designed not only to color epoxy resin but also—and above all—to protect it from UV rays and the yellowing they can cause. Painting epoxy resin is therefore possible and can be a very good idea, provided that the right products are used.
Painting epoxy resin: which products should you use?
As you’ve probably gathered, painting epoxy resin is possible and can even be beneficial, as some paints also protect it against UV radiation. However, certain paints should be avoided on epoxy resin, and a few precautions must be taken to achieve optimal results.
First of all, it’s important to know that epoxy resin does not tolerate water-based paints. You should also be aware that specialist suppliers offer paints specifically designed for use on epoxy resin. Available in paste or liquid form, these products ensure excellent compatibility and perfect adhesion with epoxy. In addition, they offer very good long-term durability.
Good to know: when painting epoxy resin, make sure to choose suitable products such as those mentioned above. Avoid using acrylic paint, oil paint, or watercolor, as they are not designed to adhere properly to a surface like epoxy resin.
What are the alternatives to paint for coloring epoxy resin?
Pigments
More commonly used to color epoxy resin, color pigments provide very attractive results with vibrant, deep colors. Supplied in powder form, these pigments can easily be mixed into the resin at the same time as the hardener.
On the market, there are two main types of powdered pigments: natural and synthetic. Natural pigments may be derived from earths or minerals that have been dried and finely ground beforehand. While these nature-based products are more environmentally friendly, they do not offer as wide a range of colors as synthetic pigments. Synthetic pigments, on the other hand, provide an extensive choice, with new colors introduced every year. You can find our various colorants in our online store, including the SC Clear Color range, which features colors such as blue, red, and many others.
Be careful to dose your pigments correctly. Do not exceed 5% colorant when tinting your epoxy resin, as exceeding this limit may affect the quality of the curing process.
Ink
Traditional ink is partly water-based. As mentioned earlier, it is not recommended to use water-containing products to color epoxy resin. However, alcohol-based inks are also available. With a very high concentration of color pigments, they can also be used to color epoxy resin creations. Just a few drops are usually enough to achieve a satisfactory result.
Be aware, however, that alcohol-based inks have poor UV resistance. As a result, if you choose this type of colorant for your epoxy resin, it may be necessary to apply an additional treatment to preserve the appearance of your finished piece over time.
