Step 1 – Prepare the kitchen and the countertop

Use plastic sheeting or trash bags along with masking tape to cover all surfaces and areas that should not be coated with epoxy resin. Take your time and be meticulous. Cover every surface that could be splashed with resin, leaving only the countertop exposed. This step is essential, as epoxy resin is very difficult to remove once cured.

Step 2 – Safety first

Epoxy resin stains—and no, you won’t be able to remove it by washing your clothes in the machine. It’s best to wear old work clothes.

Also wear safety goggles and don’t forget a mask to protect yourself from fumes produced when mixing the resin and the hardener.

It is recommended to work in a well-ventilated area, ideally with a fan directing air away from the project area.

Finally, wear latex gloves throughout the entire application process and dispose of them once the job is complete.

Step 3 – Mix the resin and the hardener

Calculate the amount of resin needed by measuring your countertop.

Once calculated, measure the required quantity using a graduated cup or a digital scale. Do the same for the hardener in a separate container.

Mix both components in a suitably sized plastic container. Using wooden sticks, mix the resin and hardener slowly and thoroughly, making sure to eliminate any lumps.

Take the time to scrape the sides and bottom of the container and mix for at least two minutes.

Step 4 – Apply the epoxy resin

For easier application, you can pour the resin/hardener mixture into a clean paint tray.

Apply the epoxy resin to your countertop using a paint roller. You can also use brushes to ensure the resin spreads evenly over the entire surface.

Be careful not to apply a layer that is too thick, as this can be dangerous. For safety, always refer to the instructions provided on your epoxy resin packaging.

During application, make sure to remove any air bubbles as they appear. You can use a heat gun to gently apply heat where bubbles form.

Continue spreading the epoxy resin until it evenly covers the entire surface.

Step 5 – Drying and finishing

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the epoxy to cure for at least 48 hours.

Once the resin is fully cured, carefully remove the masking tape, discard the newspapers, and remove all protective coverings.

After the first coat has cured sufficiently, a second coat of resin can be applied if needed.

Finally, you may need to sand the edges slightly if the resin has overflowed during application.
