How to Make an Epoxy Grout: Step-by-Step

Required Materials

  • Epoxy resin and hardener kit

  • Glitter / pigments

  • Two sponges

  • A rubber grout float

  • A spatula

  • A trowel

  • Two buckets of water

1 – Mixing the Resin

The first step is to mix the resin and the hardener. Carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which can be found on the resin packaging. Instructions may vary depending on the resin type and brand.

Pay close attention to the recommended mixing ratio. Weigh or measure the required amounts of resin and hardener using a measuring cup or graduated bucket before pouring them into a sufficiently large container.

Mix using a wooden stick or a mechanical mixer for at least 3 minutes. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the container thoroughly to obtain a homogeneous mixture.

2 – Customizing Your Resin

Epoxy resin is naturally transparent. To add color or style, you can customize it by adding pigments or glitter. This allows you to create a unique and personalized look for your tiles.

Tip: Test a small quantity of your mixture in a controlled environment before applying it to your entire tiled surface. This will allow you to preview the final appearance and proceed with confidence.

3 – Applying the Epoxy Resin

Once your tiles have been thoroughly cleaned and dried, you can begin application. Use a trowel to scoop the grout and place it onto a rubber grout float.

Spread the resin across the tiles using the float, ensuring that the epoxy grout fully penetrates the joints. Remove as much excess resin as possible. The setting time is relatively fast, typically between 30 and 40 minutes.

4 – Cleaning the Tiles

Using a wet Scotch-Brite sponge (the type with a scrubbing side), clean the entire tile surface.

Keep the sponge flat to avoid digging into the joints. Smooth evenly and wipe thoroughly to remove excess resin while keeping the joints clean and well-defined.

The final step is rinsing the tiles. This time, use a large absorbent sponge and prepare two buckets of water: one for rinsing the dirty sponge and one with clean water for rewetting it.

Clean the entire surface again using the sponge. Rinse and wring it out in the dirty-water bucket, then soak it in clean water before continuing. Repeat as necessary, changing the water if needed.

Once cleaning is complete, allow the epoxy grout to dry for the recommended curing time.
