How to dry epoxy resin?
Drying and curing of epoxy resin are essential steps in the use of epoxy resin. In order for them to be carried out in the best conditions, the room in which you work the resin must be heated between 20 and 25 degrees. A lower temperature increases the viscosity of the product, which slows down the drying process and can alter the quality of the finish. For a fast and quality drying, it is also necessary to take into account the humidity of the part which should not be too high.
Depending on the thickness of the resin coating, the drying time is more or less long. However, it is considered necessary to wait 24 to 72 hours before having an optimal drying and hardening. From this point on, the resin can be worked on and processed as desired.
How to polish and shine epoxy resin?
Whatever the nature of your project, whether you've decided to renovate a piece of wood furniture with an epoxy coating or you want to refinish your floors with this product, the polishing step is essential to obtain a smooth, transparent and glossy finish. Instructions for a successful effect.
First of all, it is important to know that polishing should not be done before the epoxy resin is completely dry. After this time and depending on the surface to be polished and its regularity, several techniques can be used:
- Manual polishing.
The traditional manual technique is certainly the most used and effective method to polish epoxy resin. Using an orbital polisher and up to 1500 grit sandpaper, the surface of the coating is polished to a smooth, glass-like finish. Although this technique is effective, it is generally reserved for a professional because it requires proper equipment and expertise. On the other hand, manual polishing is recommended for small surfaces such as a piece of furniture or an object for example.
- The epoxy resin finish.
This other polishing technique consists in applying a layer of epoxy resin on the surface to obtain a mirror effect. This technique can be used in two different ways: either by pouring or with a brush.
Finally, for detail and a glossy finish, a clear polyurethane spray is the ideal solution, but an acrylic spray varnish can also be applied as an alternative if you cannot find the first product.
How to color epoxy resin?
If the use of epoxy resin is so appreciated, it is largely because of the numerous possibilities of finishes and colors that it allows. Naturally transparent, thanks to the addition of pigments, this product can be colored as you wish. Here are a few tips on how to successfully color epoxy resins.
Epoxy resin coloring can be achieved through a variety of processes. The safest and most reliable way to do this is to use perfectly dry powdered colorants. This powder incorporated in the resin will then give it the desired color. Nevertheless, some liquid or paste products can also be used for the same purpose but these must be compatible with the epoxy resin at the risk of compromising the transparency of the coating and increasing its viscosity.
How to dose epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin is more difficult to dose than polyester and requires great precision when dosing. Usually sold in kit form, the product comes in two bottles: one containing the resin and the other containing the hardener. The two components must be dosed separately. There are two methods to perform this operation:
- Weight dosing.
As the name implies, this type of dosing will require the use of an electronic scale to dose the product. The appropriate quantities are indicated on the label of the components and it is essential to follow the instructions to the letter.
Using a cup placed on the scale, you will then pour the indicated proportions.
Good to know: don't forget to press the "tare" button on the scale when placing the cup on the scale so that the weight of the container does not distort the calculations.
- Volumetric dosing.
This second dosing method does not require a scale. The use of a measuring cup is sufficient. As with weight dosing, the volume ratios are indicated on the product label and should be referred to for proper mixing.
Once the proper dosages have been made, the epoxy resin and its hardener should be mixed for 2 to 3 minutes until the mixture is homogeneous.
Good to know: epoxy resin is a chemical component that requires specific equipment for its handling. If you are in direct contact with the product, remember to wear a mask, goggles, protective clothing and nitrile gloves.
