How to clean epoxy resin? What are the appropriate products?

Even for the most careful of us, clumsy situations can occur and when these moments happen, it is important to act quickly. How do you clean an epoxy stain? Here are some good tips to take note of!

Cleaning the resin and its hardener

When an accident occurs and a resin stain appears, be aware that it cannot be cleaned like food or paint stains. First of all, it is important to dissociate the resin from its hardener. Indeed, when the preparation of the mixture has not yet been carried out and the two components are separated, different products are needed to clean them.

If it is a stain of resin alone, you can get rid of it with detergents such as acetone, alcohol or nitro thinner. Note that these solvents can be toxic to the skin and that it is advisable to wear protective gloves when handling them.

As for the hardener alone, white vinegar works very well!

Good to know: if you inadvertently pour epoxy resin on your hands, do not use any solvent at the risk of burning your skin: the use of a natural professional degreaser sold in a specialized store is recommended.

Cleaning of solid state epoxy resin

Once the preparation between the resin base and its hardener has been completed, the mixture takes an average of 24 to 72 hours to dry and therefore harden. If you notice a stain too late, you can start by cleaning it with a solvent such as acetone and then run a small amount of white vinegar over the surface to finish.

Cleaning epoxy resin from clothing

Although it is recommended to wear protective equipment when handling epoxy resin, a stain on clothing can quickly occur. If in such a situation, many despair of finding their favorite shirt in good condition, know that there are also solutions! Our epoxies are not water-soluble, so the only option is acetone or household alcohol.

If, on the other hand, the resin has had time to harden, the task is much more difficult to remove. Most often, the fiber is impregnated with no way to remedy it. However, there is a solvent that can clean such a stain, but at the same time it can damage the fabric. It is trichloroethylene.

Cleaning epoxy resin from the floor

When handling epoxy resin, it is not only important to have protective equipment yourself, but also to protect the environment around you, including the flooring. However, if you are reading this paragraph, this recommendation will most likely only be useful to you next time. If your floor is stained, there's no need to hold it against yourself for too long because you need to act quickly.

In its liquid state, epoxy resin is easily removed with a solvent such as acetone. Place a piece of paper or cloth soaked in solvent over the stain for a few minutes to allow the product to work more effectively.

If the resin has already hardened, then using a spatula is the only way to remove the components. In the case of floor coverings with irregularities (wooden floors, terracotta tiles, etc.), you can also use an abrasive paper to remove the resin completely. Once the stain is gone, a little solvent will do the finishing.
